Fall 2011 Calendar Events

We probably recognize the names of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel as some of Israel’s major prophets. but what about those lesser prophets beginning with Hosea and finishing out the old testament. While these prophets wrote to the rulers of Israel and Judah, Their messages are important for us today. Let’s spend the Sundays this fall in the final books of the Old Testament.

Sept. 4: Communion Sunday. We conclude our look at Jesus teachings on the kingdom of heaven. The Kingdom is like ten virgins who were waiting for the arrival of the bridegroom. What does this scripture tell us about the kingdom of heaven? Join us to find out.

Sept. 10: Board members: Board Meeting at Noon.

Sept. 11: Hosea. The first of the minor prophets not because of less importance but because of size. His ministry began during a time of prosperity in Israel but the prosperity was only external because inwardly the people were idolatrous and wicked. Hosea shows that despite the people’s faithlessness, God is faithful.

Sept. 18: Joel. Joel appeals to the people of Judah to repent and avert the coming disaster. He speaks to us today in the same way, “Return to the lord your God, For he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness” (Joel 2:13) let’s look at true humility and repentance.

Sept. 25: Amos. What can a shepherd and cultivator of sycamore trees turn prophet say to his people? You don’t need to be professionally trained, just be obedient to God’s call. Amos proclaimed God’s desire of compassion for the poor, justice for the oppressed, and action instead of complacency. So let’s have a heart check up and find out how we can renew or hearts today and everyday.

Oct. 2: Obadiah. There is too much pride in the world today! pride and self-centeredness will reap destruction. The children of Israel forgot that God was number one and had to face God’s judgment. As followers of Jesus, our oneness or unity in Him should be our number one concern as we approach the Lord’s Table. Let us take communion as one body.

In October and November: We will continue in the prophets, namely Jonah, Micah, Nahum, and Habakkuk, Zephaniah, and Haggai. After advent we will finish the prophets with Zechariah and Malachi.
